How it works
Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100. Total = bill + tip. Per person = total ÷ number of people. Use 18–20% in the US for table service.
Frequently asked
- What is a normal tip percentage in the US?
- The standard tip is 18–20% of the pre-tax bill for sit-down service. For takeout or counter service, 10% or a flat amount is common.
- Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
- Either is acceptable. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal saves a small amount; tipping on the total is simpler and slightly more generous.
- How do I split a bill evenly?
- Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. This calculator does both at once.
- How much should I tip on a $100 bill?
- At 18% the tip is $18 (total $118). At 20% it is $20 ($120). At 25% it is $25 ($125). The table above lists tip amounts for other common bills.
- Do I need to tip on takeout or delivery?
- Takeout is optional — a few dollars or 10% is generous. Delivery drivers typically receive $3–5 or 10–15% of the bill, more in bad weather or for large orders.
Tipping norms by country
Tipping expectations vary widely. These are the conventions locals actually follow.
- United States18–20% at restaurants
- Servers depend on tips. 18% for standard service, 20% for good, 25%+ for exceptional. Counter and quick-service: $1–2 or 10% if you sit and stay.
- Canada15–20%
- Slightly below US norms. 15% is acceptable for adequate service, 18% for good service, 20% for exceptional.
- United Kingdom10–15% (often included)
- Many restaurants add a 12.5% optional service charge — check the bill before tipping on top. If no charge is listed, 10–15% in cash is generous.
- Continental Europe5–10% or round up
- Service is generally included by law. Locals round up to the nearest euro or leave 5–10% for table service. Anything over 10% is unusual.
- JapanDo not tip
- Tipping is not part of the culture and can cause confusion. Good service is the baseline expectation rather than a paid extra.
- Australia & New ZealandOptional, not expected
- Hospitality wages are higher, so tipping is not built in. 10% for outstanding service is appreciated but never required.
