How it works
Each letter grade maps to grade points: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0 (with ± variants of 0.3 / 0.7 below). GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits). Weighted GPA adds 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP/IB courses.
Frequently asked
- What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
- Unweighted treats all A grades as 4.0 regardless of course difficulty. Weighted adds a bonus (typically 0.5 for honors, 1.0 for AP/IB) so a tough A counts more than an easy one.
- What GPA do I need for college?
- Selective US universities typically want 3.7+ unweighted (4.2+ weighted). State flagships often accept 3.0–3.5. Highly selective programs (Ivy, top STEM) usually require 3.9+ alongside test scores.
- Do colleges use weighted or unweighted GPA?
- Most colleges recalculate using their own scale — many strip away weighting and only count core academic courses. The number that matters most is the one the admissions office computes, not the one on your transcript.
