GPA (4.0 scale)
3.20/ 4
Linear conversion: GPA = (CGPA ÷ 10) × 4. This is the formula most US application portals expect for self-reported GPA.
CGPA → GPA table
| CGPA (10-point) | GPA (4.0) |
|---|---|
| 6.0 | 2.40 |
| 7.0 | 2.80 |
| 7.5 | 3.00 |
| 8.0 | 3.20 |
| 8.5 | 3.40 |
| 9.0 | 3.60 |
| 9.5 | 3.80 |
| 10.0 | 4.00 |
How it works
Linear conversion: GPA = (CGPA ÷ 10) × 4. So an 8.5 CGPA = 3.4 GPA. Many US universities use their own course-by-course recalculation, but the linear formula is what WES and most application portals expect for the self-reported field.
Frequently asked
- What is 8 CGPA in 4.0 GPA?
- (8 ÷ 10) × 4 = 3.2 GPA on the 4.0 scale.
- Will US universities use this number directly?
- Some do; others recalculate course by course based on the grading scale on your transcript. WES — the most-used evaluator — uses a sub-scale that maps grade ranges to GPA points, but the linear formula is the closest single-number estimate.
- My university uses a 7-point scale. How do I convert?
- Use the proportional formula: GPA = (your CGPA ÷ your max) × 4. So 6.0 on a 7-point scale = (6 ÷ 7) × 4 ≈ 3.43.
